What Is Platelet-Rich Plasma?

PRP is made from a sample of your own blood. The sample is placed in a machine that separates its parts and concentrates the platelets in a portion of the plasma. A provider then injects that preparation into the area being treated.

Platelets contain growth factors involved in the body’s response to injury. PRP is being studied for a number of joint and tendon conditions. Results vary, so we’ll talk with you about what is known for your condition and what you can reasonably expect.

We Look at More Than Pain Relief

When joint pain improves, we also want to know how you’re moving. Can you walk farther, use the stairs, reach comfortably, or return to an activity you’ve been avoiding?

If PRP is recommended, we’ll explain how it fits into your overall care plan. Our medical providers and rehab team work together under one roof to follow both your symptoms and your function.

FAQs About Platelet-Rich Plasma

HOW IS PRP TREATMENT PERFORMED?

A provider draws a small sample of your blood. The sample is processed to concentrate the platelets, and the resulting PRP is injected into the area being treated. Before treatment, we’ll explain the procedure and answer your questions.

IS PRP RIGHT FOR EVERYONE WITH JOINT PAIN?

No. Your symptoms, diagnosis, health history, and goals all matter. PRP has been studied more for some conditions, including certain tendon problems and knee osteoarthritis, than for others. An evaluation helps us determine whether it’s an option worth discussing with you.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SEE RESULTS?

There’s no set timeline or guaranteed result. Some patients may notice a change while others may not benefit. We’ll discuss what to expect for your condition and check your progress after treatment.

HOW DOES PRP FIT INTO MY CARE PLAN?

PRP may be one part of a personalized plan. Depending on your needs, your plan may also include rehab or other care offered at Advantage Physical Medicine. We’ll explain why each recommendation is being made so you can decide what’s right for you.
